Apple has published a new hardbound photo book, titled “Designed by Apple in California,” which features 450 photographs chronicling 20 years of Apple product design. Dedicated to the memory of the company’s late CEO Steve Jobs, the photo book has been eight years in the making.
20 Years of Apple Product Design
Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer, gives the forward for the book. He explains that the book’s purpose is to describe their process and their values through the work itself. Jony Ive says, “The idea of genuinely trying to make something great for humanity was Steve’s motivation from the beginning, and it remains both our ideal and our goal as Apple looks to the future. This archive is intended to be a gentle gathering of many of the products the team has designed over the years. We hope it brings some understanding to how and they exist, while serving as a resource for students of all design disciplines.”
The photo book is a 300 page volume that, according to Apple, has been printed on “specially-milled, custom dyed” paper made in Germany. It also features matte silver gilded edges and a cover bound in linen with an embossed spine. The book itself contains 450 images of Apple products printed in eight colors with high definition 280lpi screening. It uses what Apple describes as, “low ghost inks.”
As of now it remains unclear who printed the book. Francis Atterbury, book production expert and managing director at Hurtwood Press, had this to say, “It certainly looks like a nice, clean print job. I know that Jony Ive was given one of our Artisan Books a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it — maybe this is the result!”
Designed by Apple in California is available now on Apple’s website in two sizes: small (10.20” x 12.75”) for $199 and large (13” x 16.25”) for $299. Check out more images of the book here.
